Position Qualification

Position Summary
The Munroe-Meyer Institute for Genetics and Rehabilitation (MMI) at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) is accepting applications for a Pediatrician at open faculty rank (Rank DOQ). This position will provide outpatient comprehensive medical care to children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder, other intellectual and developmental disabilities, as well as neurotypical individuals at Munroe-Meyer Institute for Genetics and Rehabilitation. Work in collaboration with other healthcare professionals to ensure continuity of care and deliver personalized and evidence-based medical services in a collaborative and supportive environment. Promote wellness and educate about the prevention of illness and health promotion, performs physical examinations and developmental assessments, manages pediatric illness, and helps families meet their health needs.

Practice Responsibilities:
  • Provide high quality, compassionate care that reflects evidence-based guidelines, best practice, ethical considerations, cost and clinical effectiveness and family acceptance and/or satisfaction.
  • Assess the health status of infants, children, adolescents, and young adults and develop appropriate plans for health supervision and illness management in an outpatient setting by:
    • Obtaining a comprehensive developmental, health and medical history.
    • Performing physical examinations based on age and history.
    • Assessing and diagnosing childhood illnesses, including chronic and acute conditions, or any other condition that is within the expertise and knowledge of the pediatrician.
    • Identifying normal versus abnormal growth and developmental patterns.
    • Performing or recommending age-appropriate and condition-specific screening, laboratory tests and diagnostic procedures.
    • Reviewing lab results and developing treatment plans according based on findings.
    • Analyzing factors that impact growth and development.
  • Provide preventive care, including screenings and immunizations.
  • Provide comprehensive, age/developmentally-appropriate teaching, counseling, and advising children and their families about growth and development, health status, illnesses, management plans, and health promotion, disease and injury preventing activities and provide anticipatory guidance and identify risk factors based on growth and developmental factors, cultural and belief variables and family systems.
  • Use prescriptive authority, in accordance with state and federal laws and regulations to treat illness, improve health status, and provide preventive care, by:
    • Prescribing medications based on a child’s clinical history, current assessment data and health care needs.
    • Prescribing medications based on current research and a thorough knowledge base in pharmacotherapeutics.
    • Providing patient and family education regarding intended effects, specific instructions, side effects, and possible interactions of medications and/or treatments, cost, and alternative treatments or procedures.
    • Monitor therapeutic and potential adverse effects of medications.
  • Formulate a holistic, culturally sensitive, family-centered plan of care recognizing the child and family are active participants.
  • Collaborate with internal and external healthcare partners to coordinate patient care to ensure high quality care.
  • Provide pediatric specialist consultation to other health care providers.
  • Provide high quality care that reflects evidence-based practice, ethical considerations, cost and clinical effectiveness and family acceptance and/or satisfaction.
  • Utilize any other appropriate intervention(s) within the scope of practice parameters, expertise and knowledge of the Pediatrician.
  • Take call on weekdays, weekends and holidays in rotation with the other providers in the practice.
  • Document patient interactions in patient’s medical record and maintain accurate and timely records in compliance with healthcare regulations and practice standards.
  • Submit accurate and timely billing.
  • Maintain productivity standards according to program requirements.
  • Protect confidentiality of patient information according to HIPAA standards.
  • Participate in continuing education and professional development to stay current on medical advancements, treatments, and technologies.
  • Engage in education, research, or other scholarly activity as a member of an academic medical center.

Required Qualifications
  • Medical degree (MD or DO) from an accredited medical school.
  • Completion of a Residency in Pediatrics from a ACGME accredited Pediatric Institution.
  • Board Certified/Board Eligible in Pediatrics by the American Board of Pediatrics.
  • Eligible for state medical license to practice medicine in the state of Nebraska.
  • Current DEA certificate.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) through the American Heart Association.
Supplemental Qualifications
  • Experience in outpatient pediatric medicine.
  • Experience with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
  • Knowledge of EPIC electronic health record systems.
