DEPARTMENT FUNCTION/JOB OVERVIEW

This position functions under the supervision of the Pharmacy Manager with authentication by Registered Pharmacists to execute the general delivery, stocking, and charging operations within the department. Under immediate pharmacist verification, the Pharmacy Technician I performs all technical functions required for packaging, labeling, charging, preparation, computer input and delivering of medications according to established operational definitions of the department and facility, based on requirements of the Nebraska Board of Pharmacy. Work will be performed in an ethical and legal manner following organizational policies, processes, protocols and procedures. Responsible for quality service delivery and internal/external customer relations for Madonna as a whole, including upholding the mission and values for the department and facility.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    (INFORMATION)

  1. Compile and document patient data to assist with billing procedures and the updating of medication administration records.
  2. Compile patient data to insure departmental compliance with state and federal regulations in the day-to-day activities of the department, including clerical maintenance of patient profiles and records, and compilation of patient monitoring criteria to assist in assuring safe medication delivery.
  3. Compile and compare data to assist with inventory maintenance including daily inventory re-order functions and fiscal year-end inventory process.

  4. Communicate (speak) respectfully and with compassion to patients, staff, students and the public.
  5. Communicate (speak) to patients, staff, students and public via telephone calls/messages, referring calls/messages to appropriate person(s) with accuracy and timeliness. Perform problem-solving concerning prioritization of telephone calls and with appropriate follow-up.
  6. Communicate (speak) to patients and/or their families making verbal offers of counseling on behalf of the pharmacist, if applicable.
  7. Promote the role of pharmacy as a necessary and contributing member of the health care team through representation of the department in a prestigious and professional manner.
  8. Perform other functions as assigned in order to achieve the goals within the department.

         (THINGS)
  9. Set up and operate departmental office equipment, including calculator, fax machine, personal computer and printer.
  10. Set up medication as prescribed utilizing packaging system specific to each nursing area. This process may involve clerical interpretation of physician order, ability to calculate by ratio or proportion and knowledge of metric/standard measurement conversions.
  11. Handle inventory insuring accurate, timely dispensing of medications as prescribed by physician.
  12. Handle inventory through delivery of filled medication orders/prescriptions to nursing areas.
  13. Handle inventory through delivery, exchange and retrieval of maintenance unit dose fill to and from nursing area according to cycle specific to the area.
  14. Handle inventory using Automated Dispensing Machines.
  15. Handle inventory insuring proper storage and placement on shelves on nursing units of stock pharmacy items.
  16. Maintain a clean, organized and safe environment.  Handle and operate all necessary equipment and performs required duties according to established safety standards to maintain compliance with regulations and prevent injury.


    PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

    Light work - occasional lifting of up to 20 pounds. Walking or standing to a significant degree. Ability to constantly move from standing, sitting and vice versa to fill orders, make deliveries through facility. Ability to handle kneeling, crouching, stooping, reaching when retrieving, filling, delivering and preparing medications. Ability to operate, handle and functionally perform the computer operations.
    Indoor work - not exposed to outside elements. There is occasional potential for exposure to chemical/biological materials requiring special handling (handling chemotherapeutic medications and other chemicals).         Requires sufficient sight to see and read reports and computer screen.  Requires sufficient hearing and speaking to communicate by phone or in person.

    QUALIFICATIONS (Education/Training and/or Experience)

            Education:       High School graduate or equivalent
    Licensure: Must be registered by the State of Nebraska as a Pharmacy Technician or Pharmacy Intern, or eligible for immediate registration prior to start date. Current CPHT Certification required, or must obtain CPHT certification within 1 year of initial registration with NE DHHS.

    Experience:     One year experience in hospital pharmacy setting with experience in IV admixture, unit dose system, and computer applications preferred.
